How to Navigate the Ethical Maze of AI
1. Privacy (if AI gets hacked and leaks your info):
- AI is not immune so plan for the worst-case scenario if your info were to be shared with the public
- Read the privacy terms of each AI tool on how they store your inputs and info (this is tedious but key!)
2. Company rules on how to use AI:
- Make clear lists of what AI can and can’t be used for (e.g., avoid real client info, personal identifiable information, financial proprietary data, etc.)
- Update your contracts with legal protection and include an indemnity clause (this is when you may need a lawyer)
- Be open with customers about how you are using AI
- Keep updating the rules as new issues come up
- Continuously train employees how to use AI responsibly
- Verify all AI-generated content – it’s not a perfect tool and can produce false results
3. Plagiarism, copying, and ownership of ideas:
- Give credit to sources used to train the AI
- Get permission to use other people’s work
- Teach AI to tell the difference between inspiration and copying
- Be clear when content is made by AI
- Set rules for using AI in school and work
- Address worries about AI accidentally copying protected workn
Word of Caution: Keep your guidelines simple, clear, and flexible. We’re all still learning and adapting to how to use AI.
