We review dozens of websites a week and time and time again, we find they’re missing the mark because they’re doing or saying “too much” of the wrong things.
6 Mistakes that Are Hurting Your Website
1. Too fancy: Keep It Simple, Smarty (K.I.S.S.) is a good rule of thumb when it comes to your website content. Focus on clear, simple, and straight-forward language your customers use to describe the problem you help solve, not corporate jargon.
2. Too many options: Offering a plethora of menu options overwhelms your visitors. Just show your most important pages and put the rest in the footer.
3. Too “We” vs “You” focused: Many websites talk about themselves and their features vs the client pain points and the benefits they offer. Remember: It’s not what you have, it’s what your customer gets. How do you make life better for them? Always answer WIIFM: “What’s in in it for me?”
4. Too text heavy: People skim websites, they don’t like to read long walls of text. Break up your content into smaller chunks with headings, short paragraphs (3-4 lines), appropriate images, lots of white space, bullets, and vary the formatting to highlight and bold important text.
5. Too confusing CTAs: Don’t be vague, too clever, or even misleading with your CTAs. Your button copy needs to be clear and simple to direct your audience.
6. Too generic or stale: Last but not least, websites that lack a human touch. Captiva’s superpower is humanizing brands, so this one is near and dear to our hearts. Your visitors need to know not only what you do but who the real people are behind your brand. So don’t be shy. Share about your journey and your big WHY on the home page and then expand on the About page.
